  • Title: Counseling key in Norplant satisfaction.
Journal: Contracept Technol Update; 1999 Aug; 20(8):90-1. PubMed ID: 12295257.
    Abstract:
Research conducted in Florida revealed that counseling on the risks and benefits of Norplant is the key to users' satisfaction. Extensive preparations were made prior to Norplant's introduction: the state produced its own educational videos and coordinated training sessions for clinicians. Patient counseling sessions were to make use of the so called BRAIDED (Benefits, Risks, opportunity to Ask questions, Inquiry, Discussion, Education, Documentation) method. More than 90% of Norplant users were satisfied. Norplant use has declined in the past few years due to media coverage and litigation surrounding the method, as well as the advent of depot-medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) injections as an alternate progestin-only method. However, many satisfied Norplant users have asked for new sets to be inserted, while others, having fulfilled the desired "spacing" of their family, have scheduled removal at the end of the 5-year time line.
