  • Title: U.K. distributor pulls Norplant; U.S. holds firm.
Journal: Contracept Technol Update; 1999 Jul; 20(7):77-8. PubMed ID: 12295382.
    Abstract:
This article highlights the dispute over the discontinuation of Norplant sales by the UK distributor and the support of US on the product. Norplant was reported to be a safe and efficient method for women looking for long-term contraception. The controversy started over the funding of the new contraceptive and its 4-year trial among the doctors and the government. Sales in UK were affected, since it came to a point where the contraceptives were unavailable in the market. Since its introduction in the UK market in 1993, it had leveled off to 55,000. It was only in 1995 that arguments between the British Medical Association and the National Health Service Executive over fees for counseling and insertion of the implant system have caused the cessation of inflow of the product into the market. Also, 275 British women who declared experiencing side effects while using the product filed complaints. The discontinuation of Norplant sales was perceived as a disappointment but some suggests that it would be a great opportunity for women to try other forms of contraception. Despite these reports, the US still continues its support and use of Norplant.
