Abstract: The safety of third-generation oral contraceptives (OCs) is being confirmed by health experts throughout the world after a research paper was published reporting that admissions for venous thromboembolism in a Danish hospital have escalated to 16% since the increase in prescriptions for third-generation pills. The British government released a statement affirming the safety of OCs after the publication of the study in a British medical journal. In early 1999, a British medical committee expressed their support for third-generation OCs as a first-line contraceptive choice. While Danish researchers commented that their findings are in agreement with their hypothesis that these OCs increase the risk of venous thromboembolism in women, they say that results should be interpreted with extra care and in line with other findings.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
