  • Title: Orphans are a growing problem -- Dr. Rudolf Knippenberg.
Journal: Asian Forum Newsl; 1999 Dec; ():9. PubMed ID: 12295692.
    Abstract:
"Young People Living in a World with HIV/AIDS," a paper written by Dr. Rudolf Knippenberg, describes the situation facing young people as they try to cope with the disease. Every sentinel surveillance figure of pregnant women with HIV/AIDS implies that in 3 or 6 months¿ time another child will be infected with HIV; another family and another community will be facing the prospect of caring for an orphaned or infected child. Moreover, HIV creates a burden on the older children of HIV-infected women, whose futures are threatened by the burden imposed on family finances and resources by illness or death. The emotional and social developments during adolescence become difficult for children who are orphaned by HIV/AIDS. Such children and youth are often left with little financial resources, limited care and attention from elderly kins, and the traumatic heritage of death and illness. Discrimination and stigma aggravate their burdens.
