  • Title: Norplant insertions, removals remain low.
Journal: Contracept Technol Update; 2000 Sep; 21(9):105. PubMed ID: 12296240.
    Abstract:
Norplant contraceptive implants contain a very low dose of progestin and no estrogen, and offer cumulative 7-year pregnancy rates similar to those characterizing surgical sterilization. But despite its advantages, few women in the US are selecting Norplant implants, say participants in Contraceptive Technology Update's 2000 Contraception Survey. The survey indicated that nearly 72% of surveyed health care providers reported no removals, compared with 69.3% in 1999. Furthermore, under 70% of participants have not performed any Norplant insertions in the year 2000, comparable to the 1999 statistics; 16 performed 1-5 insertions and 7.3% inserted 6-10 implants. Overall, only 1.8% of survey respondents had performed 11-25 insertions, and less than 1% reported 25 or more insertions, declining from 1999's 3.4% and 1.6%, respectively.
