Title: Abortion in Canada as a public health problem and as a community health measure. Author: Schwenger CW. Journal: Fam Plann Resume; 1977; 1(1):182-3. PubMed ID: 12308787. Abstract: The Canadian criminal code was revised in 1969 to permit therapeutic abortion following committee certification that the pregnancy jeopardized the mother's health. Since that time there has been an increase in the annual number of abortions performed, creating strong national opposition to the law. Passage of the revised law seems to have cut down on the incidence of illegal abortion, illegitimate births, and forced marriages. It is expected that the law will also result in improved perinatal and neonatal health. There remains a need for improved abortion counseling and contraception and sterilization services.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
