Title: [Why abortion?]. Journal: Fam Dev; 1977; 7():21-2. PubMed ID: 12309926. Abstract: It has been estimated that in the U.S. 75% of fecundations terminate in spontaneous abortion, very often in the first few days after conception. There are, on the other hand, several dozen millions of induced abortions a year in the world; causes are poverty first of all, but also the ever receding rate of infant mortality, resulting in large families where a newborn would be unwelcome. Most western countries and China have legalized abortion on request; a few African nations also have legalized it in certain specific cases. Since, however, abortion is illegally practiced in all African countries in conditions extremely unfavorable to the health and the life of the mother, it is hoped that new laws will replace the old legislation dating from colonial times.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
