Title: [Influence of cultural factors in mothers with malnourished infants]. Author: Auba G, Alvarez ML. Journal: Rev Chil Nutr; 1983 Apr; 11(1):9-14. PubMed ID: 12312971. Abstract: The influence of infant malnutrition on the cultural level, on customs concerning childbearing and beliefs related to maternal breastfeeding are analyzed. A sample of 80 mother-infant dyads from the Region 7 (Central Chile) were studied; 40 had undernourished infants and the others had normal infants. The groups were further subdivided into the rural group and 20 were assigned to the urban group. All mothers were part of the low income population. Results show that low cultural level, false notions concerning the nutritional value of maternal milk, limited knowledge concerning breastfeeding, and its actual duration appear to be significantly associated with infant malnutrition. An in depth study to identify cultural barriers responsible for nutritional deficits appears necessary and urgent. (author's modified)[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
