Title: Back to basics. Journal: AIDS Action; 1988 Mar; (2):1, 8. PubMed ID: 12315649. Abstract: Health education to prevent and control AIDS must be community-based and must include counseling as well as information. It will have different objectives depending on the target audience. To health care providers it must provide guidelines for advising people about safer sex, recognizing clinical symptoms, taking precautions when caring for AIDS patients, and following sterile procedures when giving injections. To traditional health practicioners it must teach proper technics for sterilizing instruments. For the general public it must teach safer sex, especially the avoidance of multiple partners; and it must teach people to demand sterile needles and syringes and screened blood for transfusions, and to avoid tattooing, circumcision and scarification with unsterilized instruments. For AIDS patients it must teach responsibility for not transmitting the disease to others as well as encouraging self-help support groups. Future issues of "AIDS Action" will provide a forum for discussing AIDS education activities.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
