Title: Spotlight: Turkey. Author: Patriquin W. Journal: Popul Today; 1990 Jan; 18(1):12. PubMed ID: 12316015. Abstract: Turkey's population stood at 55.4 million in 1989, with a 2.2% rate of natural increase. There were 30 births/1000 population (total fertility rate of 3.7) and 8 deaths/1000 population (infant mortality rate of 81/1000 live births). Until 1965, the Government of Turkey pursued a pronatalist population policy. However, a 1965 law allows individual freedom in determining one's family size and legalized contraception. Family planning service delivery programs have been integrated into numerous development projects. A 1983 survey indicated that 62% of eligible Turkish women were using some form of contraception, while 91% had knowledge of at least 1 modern method. The survey revealed an association between educational level and reproductive behavior: 82% of married women with a secondary education or more were contraceptive users compared with only 46% of illiterate married women. 50% of respondents expressed a desire for only 2 children. Internal and international immigration is, at present, Turkey's most pressing demographic concern. Trends in this area include migration from rural to urban areas of Turkey, emigration to West Germany for employment, and the immigration of ethnic Turks from Bulgaria and other Eastern European countries.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
