  • Title: South-to-South spirit: PDA shares its experience through the Asian Center.

    Abstract:
    The Asian Center for Population and Community Development was established in 1978 with financial support from the Pathfinder Fund and the Japanese Organization for International Cooperation in Family Planning Inc. Since then, 1500 participants from 40 countries have benefited from the Center's training courses. The technical information these participants have gained in management of family planning and integrated rural development programs has been applied in over 15,000 rural villages. In Thailand, Center staff have offered field observation of projects in the areas of integrated family, environmental protection, parasite control, primary health care, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome prevention, and community-based family planning service delivery. At the request of international organizations, the Asian Center has provided training, program assessment, and monitoring assistance to other Asian countries. Topics of training courses scheduled at the Center in 1990 include Women in Development: Design and Management of Income Generation and Fertility Programs: Basic Training of Trainers for Family Planning and Health Programs; and Family Planning Program Management: Community-based and Clinical Approaches. The Center is based on a South-to-South philosophy of development that emphasizes self-reliance and self-sufficiency. Reflective of this philosophy is the recently launched program, Small Grants for Community-based Self-Reliance Projects.
