Title: The World Summit for Children. Journal: Integration; 1992 Dec; (34):22. PubMed ID: 12317828. Abstract: The action plans from the UNICEF World Summit for Children held in New York in 1990 focus on the importance of family planning (FP) in securing the longterm health of children and the reduction of child mortality. FP instructs mothers to space births 2 years apart and be at least 18 years old, and to be aware of the health risks after 4 births for women over 35 years. FP gives mothers control over their own bodies and knowledge about factors that affect fertility. Mothers with fewer children are likely to provide better care. The President of Chile endorsed "prenatal care, education of mothers, health care for children, spacing of births, immunization, and a sound environment." The Conference Plan is directed at the national and international level as well as the family level. Countries and development agencies are asked to develop plans for achieving the stated goals of the Summit. Other than provision for FP there were 20 other targets identified at the Summit. Participants included Heads of State for 150 governments.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
