  • Title: HIV / AIDS global summary.
Journal: AIDS Soc; 1995; 6(2):6. PubMed ID: 12319332.
    Abstract:
Global cases of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) are estimated to have increased by 60% in 1994 (from 2.5 million in July 1993 to 4 million in July 1994). There was an 8-fold increase (from 30,000 to 250,000) in Asia during in the same period. 16 million persons are estimated to be infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) worldwide; 10 million are in sub-Saharan Africa. A shorter incubation period is suspected in Africa, which means that most persons there who are now infected will have developed AIDS by the year 2000. The infection rate during 1994 and 1995 is estimated to be 6000 per day. The rate of infection in South and Southeast Asia is accelerating at a rate similar to that in sub-Saharan Africa in the 1980s. 40% of the 12 million infected adults today are women, an increase from 25% in 1990. Tuberculosis is the leading cause of death in HIV positive adults in Africa. Infection among prostitutes in Bombay, India rose from 1% to 40% in 7 years. If the present rate of infection continues, the cost of AIDS in Asia will be $ 38-52 billion dollars by the year 2000.
