  • Title: Africa. Indonesia leads the way.
Journal: JOICFP News; 1996 Apr; (262):5. PubMed ID: 12320031.
    Abstract:
This news brief focuses on a study tour by Ghanaians to observe Indonesia's government and nongovernmental efforts in promoting family planning and maternal and child health. The Ghana representative was Dorothy Maame Donkoh, who was affiliated with the Integrated Program and the Planned Parenthood Association. The tour focused on the planning and management of a community-based national family planning program and the activities of Yayasan Kusuma Buana (YKB). The study tour involved training for 40 participants from 11 countries. Participants were engaged in a participatory approach for observation, other lectures, and discussions. There was group work, field trips, and interaction with volunteers and community members. Donkoh found the Posyandu, community-based outreach, to be very interesting and to be useful in replicating on her return to Ghana. One particularly useful component for replication in Ghana was the collaboration between health-care personnel and volunteers who provide services at the community level. There was an appreciation of the commitment of the YKB and motivational activities of this nongovernmental group in involving community leaders and teachers in the school health program. Donkoh liked this model and considered the possibility of introducing a fee-based system for parents that would support the school health program.
