  • Title: Spermicide film does not halt AIDS, study finds.
Journal: AIDS Wkly Plus; 1997 Apr 14; ():8-9. PubMed ID: 12320791.
    Abstract:
Nonoxynol-9, a spermicidal chemical, kills HIV in vitro. A 2-year study was conducted in Cameroon to determine whether nonoxynol-9 in film form blocks the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Family Health International participated in the study supported by the US National Institutes of Health. Almost 1300 female prostitutes were followed, 941 of whom completed a 1-year follow-up. All of the study participants were counseled, given condoms, and treated for other STDs. Half of the women were given vaginal film containing nonoxynol-9 and half were given a placebo film. However, the HIV transmission rate among the women over the course of the study period was 6.7% in both groups. These findings suggest that nonoxynol-9 failed to block HIV transmission. Nonoxynol-9 also did not protect against the transmission of gonorrhea and chlamydia. Counseling, condoms, and medical treatment, however, did reduce HIV transmission in both groups. There is some evidence that nonoxynol-9 use may irritate or disrupt cells in the genital tract, making women more vulnerable to HIV infection. No mention is made in this report of the extent to which any of the subjects actually used the spermicide film.
