Title: Abortions in England and Wales 1996. Journal: Abortion Rev; 1998; (66):2. PubMed ID: 12321440. Abstract: This article presents statistics on abortion performed in England and Wales during 1996. 177,495 abortions were performed in 1996, which represented an 8% increase over 1995; this increase is the first since 1990. The number of abortions increased for resident women to reach 167,916, which represents a 9% increase. The increase occurred among all age groups, except among women aged 45 and over. The highest increase occurred among women aged under 15 years (16%) and 16-19 years (15%). The abortion rate during 1995-96 among women aged 14-49 years increased from 11.99/1000 to 13.03/1000. The number of abortions performed for nonresident women increased to 9579 (a 3% increase). 4894 women reported residence in the Irish Republic; 1573 reported residence in Northern Ireland. Since 1992, 89% of abortions have been performed in the first trimester. During 1991-96, the number of abortions performed under 9 weeks' gestation doubled. The proportion performed between 13 and 19 weeks' gestation declined by half. In 1996, 40% of abortions were performed within the first 9 weeks, and 48.7% were performed during weeks 9-12. 72% of abortions were paid for or provided by the National Health Service (NHS). The NHS performed only 58% of abortions performed under 9 weeks' gestation. 61% of abortions performed under 9 weeks took place in non-NHS clinics, of which 31% were paid for by NHS agency arrangements. 28% of women had had a previous abortion. 46% had experienced a previous live birth or stillbirth.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
