Title: From the Director: USAID Office of Women in Development. Author: Lycette MA. Journal: Gend Action; 1998; 2(1):1. PubMed ID: 12321704. Abstract: That natural resources are harvested by both men and women is beginning to change the thinking of development planners concerned with designing effective resource management programs. It is also causing people to explore the root causes of women's poverty. Hungry people value survival more than any conviction they may have to protect available resources. This paper introduces an issue of a newsletter which focuses upon women's participation in natural resource management. Resource conservation projects sponsored by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) are addressing the issues of women's poverty in developing countries, including the lack of property rights, women's unpaid labor, and women's participation in public decision-making forums. Some factors which contribute to women's poverty are identified in the lead article, as well as the impact of poverty upon the environment. Other articles focus upon the ways USAID is responding to gender concerns in its natural resource management projects. Understanding the environmental roles and responsibilities of women in developing economies is essential to resource conservation and sustainable use.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
