  • Title: No over-the-counter OCs, say family planners.
Journal: Contracept Technol Update; 1998 Oct; 19(10):128. PubMed ID: 12321843.
    Abstract:
According to the 1998 "Contraceptive Technology Update" Pill Survey, US family planning providers continue to oppose over-the-counter availability of oral contraceptives (OCs). 77.5% of respondents stated OCs should remain prescription-only; a slight increase over the 72% of the last two annual surveys. In a written follow-up to their survey responses, many clinicians voiced concern that high-risk OC users, especially adolescents, would not receive Pap smears or screening for chlamydia and other sexually transmitted diseases if clinic visits were not required. Also expressed were reservations about the potential for error and abuse with nonclinical distribution. On the other hand, at least one clinician favored making 20 mcg pills exempt from prescription because of their safety, even for smokers.
