Title: African's AIDS orphans are fast-growing population. Journal: AIDS Wkly Plus; 1999 Jan 25; ():11. PubMed ID: 12321959. Abstract: According to the UN, almost 8 million children in Africa have lost their parents due to AIDS and at least 1 million children in Africa are infected with HIV. Few African children have been adopted by foreigners, mainly because extended families have traditionally taken in orphans. However, in the current context of considerable HIV/AIDS morbidity and mortality, the number of orphans has increased dramatically and there are fewer working-age adults to support them. Extended families have become emotionally and financially overburdened, and children with AIDS are often abandoned. Some orphans and other children with HIV/AIDS end up at Nyumbani Hospice, a cheerful 53-bed residence in Karen, a suburb of Nairobi.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
