Title: Production and role of uteroglobulin. Journal: Res Reprod; 1977 May; 9(3):4. PubMed ID: 12326808. Abstract: The occurrence of uteroglobulin (UG) in man and other species and its role in reproductive function is discussed. UG is found in large amounts in the uterine lumen during implantation in rabbits and other species. Its synthesis and secretion appears to be initiated by estradiol-17beta, and high levels of secretion are enhanced by progesterone. It has been shown that an increase in the estrogen:progesterone ratio at ovulation delays the production and secretion of UG in the uterine lumen. Conversely, an increase in progesterone before ovulation leads to premature production of UG and a consequent death of embryos. The results of some studies strongly suggest the importance of the stereospecificity of various steroids in the stimulation of the synthesis of uterine proteins. It is possible, however, that UG may not be specific to the uterus, since an antigen resembling the protein has been found in the lung, tranchea, and seminal plasma. A clear consensus of opinion on the function of UG has yet to emerge.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
