    Abstract:
Patterns of serum follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) throughout a single menstrual cycle in 37 women, as measure d by 2 specific radioimmunoassays, are described. LH and FSH rose sharply on Day 1 of menses and remained almost constant until shortly before the middle of the cycle when LH and, to a variable extent, FSH, rose sharply with the LH peak beginning before and lasting longer (1 1/2-2 days) than that of FSH. LH was generally lower in the follicular phase of the cycle with occasional minor peaks. FSH levels progressively decreased during the luteal phase to a mean level approximately 1/2 that seem during the follicular phase. During the follicular phase higher LH concentrations were found in samples obtained at 7-9 a.m. than samples obtained at 12 noon-2 p.m. (p less than .02) or 4-7 p.m. (p less than . 05) and higher levels of FSH were found between 7 and 9 a.m. than between 4 and 7 p.m. (p less than .05), indicating diurnal rhythm.
