Title: WHO board endorses battle against bottle. Author: Allain A. Journal: Dev Forum; 1981 Apr; 9(3):15. PubMed ID: 12337548. Abstract: At the Executive Board meeting of WHO in Geneva, January, 1981 24 of 30 members spoke up and, in most cases, demanded strong and effective legislative measures concerning the marketing of baby foods. The draft of the International Code on Marketing of Baby Foods prohibits mass media advertising, free samples, the so-called "milk nurses," and the use of health care facilities for the promotion of breast-milk substitutes. The IBFAN "Infant Formula Promotion" brochure documents 682 violations of the WHO/UNICEF recommendations, effectively demonstrating that voluntary guidelines cannot adequately curb the milk industry's practices. At the meeting, the U.S. chose to defend the right to commercial free speech rather than infant health. The U.S. is not on the Board but received special permission to speak on the topic. The draft of the code was submitted to the World Health Assembly (WHA) with the suggestion that it adopt an improved text as a recommendation and review its implementation after a 2-year trial period. The drop in birth rates and the gradual return to breast-feeding in the industrialized countries has led the infant food industry to push heavily into developing countries where the hazards of bottle-feeding are awesome.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
