    Abstract:
770 urban women aged 15-44 at 3 socioeconomic levels, low, medium low, and medium high, in La Paz, Bolivia, an altiplano city, Sucre, a valley city, and Trinidad, in the tropical zone, were interviewed regarding the duration of breastfeeding of their children under 3 years of age who had been weaned. Results showed that the duration of lactation declined from 10.5 months in the lower strata to 5.5 months in the higher strata, and from 12.3 months for illiterates and 12.5 months for the literates to 4.4 months for mothers with a technical education. Mothers at the lower, middle, and higher socioeconomic strata in La Paz breastfed for the longest durations, 11.5, 9.2, and 6.6 months respectively compared to the 10.5, 8.6, and 5.5 months for the entire sample. In general, women over 30 breastfed longer. Laborers and employees breastfed an average of 4.5 and 6.4 months, while housewives and self-employed women did so for 9.3 and 10.4 months. Women were advised to wean at 12.6 months by friends and relatives and at 7.8 months by medical personnel. Women receiving no prenatal medical care breastfed on average 11.2 months, those who received prenatal instruction in the advantages of breastfeeding did so for 7.9 months, and those who received prenatal care without instruction in the benefits of breastfeeding did so for 8 months. The main reasons for early termination of breastfeeding were employment of the mother, insufficient milk production, and doctor's order. Infants put to the breast within 1-4 hours of birth were breastfed on average for 11.4 months, compared to 8.8 for those first suckled after 25 or more hours.
