    Abstract:
    The role of migration in the urbanization process of Assam, India, is investigated. Trends in urbanization since 1901 are first briefly reviewed. Rural-urban migration in Assam during the periods 1951-1961 and 1961-1971 is then analyzed using data from the 1961 and 1971 censuses. It is concluded that "net rural to urban migration...has made a significant contribution to the total urbanisation process."
