    Abstract:
    The family life cycle concept developed by Meyer Fortes is tested using data from the 1970 Mexican census. The results indicate that this concept is not wholly applicable because of the wide prevalence of extended family households and because childbearing in Mexico is spread over an extended period, with the result that childbearing periods for mother and older daughters may overlap.
