Title: The Bangladesh experience in family planning and health. Journal: JOICFP Rev; 1987 Nov; 14():2-3. PubMed ID: 12341496. Abstract: High population growth has been identified by the Bangladesh government as the country's number 1 problem. The ministry of Health and Population Control adopted the Integrated Family Planning, Nutrition, and Parasite Control Project with the assistance of JOICFP in mid-1979 in order to test the effectiveness of its approach to increasing family planning acceptance and improving community health and social welfare in rural areas. The Integrated Project has greatly enhanced the people's awareness of previously neglected soil-transmitted parasites, personal hygiene, and general health. The project has also brought about an improvement in child health and nutrition. Child morbidity and mortality have declined. There is a simple explanation for the acceptance of the project as an effective strategy in promoting primary health care in Bangladesh: it does not require complex technology, tremendous costs, and medical personnel; it provides practical knowledge for improving health and sanitation; it enhances the people's consciousness of public health; it arouses the interest of the community to participate in the health development program; and being easy to manage, it can be run by the community itself. The Integrated Project can be expanded further. The only constraint the government faces now is shortage of funds. In the near future the project will certainly be adopted in more areas of the country.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
