Title: Universal immunization, a chance for every child. Author: Ulfat LR. Journal: Yojana; ; 31(10):26-8. PubMed ID: 12341729. Abstract: The 1987 theme for World Health Day is immunization for every child. The 6 preventable and controllable diseases -- measles, diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, polio, and tuberculosis -- are responsible for the deaths of millions. Clearly, in India immunization is a must. Vaccinations have been made accessible to almost every family in India since 1978, the time of the inception of the Expanded Program on Immunization in the country. The current task is to widen the reach of the existing immunization program from 25% to 50% of the population, following a plan designed to cover the entire country by 1990. At this time, vaccine distribution through the world saves the lives of about 1 million children each year in the developing world. If the 1990 target for universal immunization is realized, the lives of an additional 3 million children will be spared annually. Universal immunization means that no child will be denied immunization against the 6 preventable and controllable diseases.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
