Title: Control strategies. Author: Mann J. Journal: AIDS Action; 1987 Nov; (1):4-5. PubMed ID: 12341934. Abstract: Prevalence as of 1987, health, social and economic impact, and future outlook of the worldwide AIDS pandemic are reviewed. 123 countries have reported AIDS cases, and 21 have certified that they have no cases. The official number of cases is 59,000, but WHO estimates that twice as many probably exist. Probably the number of countries reporting is more indicative of the extent of AIDS spread, because of under-reporting and under-recognition of AIDS. WHO estimates that 5-10 million persons are infected with HIV. 3 outcomes are known from HIV infection: AIDS, AIDS-related illness, and HIV neurological disease. The social and economic impact of AIDS is worsened by the fact that the majority of victims are aged 20-40, that social rejection often occurs, that costs of medical care are beyond most countries' means. The future outlook is colored by the fact that HIV, a retrovirus, will infect people for life; and that HIV is spread sexually, by blood transfer, and from mother to child, thus putting most people at risk. The objectives of the WHO Special Programme on AIDS (SPA), established in 1987, are to prevent HIV transmission, to care for infected persons, and to unify national and international AIDS control efforts.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
