Title: [Demography and teaching in Togo]. Author: Duquette-ahado MT. Journal: Demogr Afr; 1986; (50):57-8. PubMed ID: 12341940. Abstract: In 1973, the Benin University introduced demography training in its geography and economic courses, but it is only since the creation, in 1975, of the Demographic Research Unit, in the bosom of the school of economic technics and management, that demography training has been extended to other fields: social sciences, urbanization medicine, and science. At a university level, it is through courses that basic demography training is given, with specific applications for each field. At the primary and secondary level, the training is given to teachers through the organization of seminars. The 1982 seminar was aimed at geography teachers of 2nd and 3rd degree. The 1983 seminar reached a wider range of teachers in Togo, and saw the realization of a document designed to help teachers communicate demographic concepts in their courses. The 1984 seminar, organized for teachers of the 1st and 2nd degree, saw the preparation of pedagogical cards. These cards, prepared by primary and secondary school inspectors, assisted by Demographic Research Unit, the FNUAP, and the National Board of Education, integrated the basic concepts of demography into the current geographic study course, emphasizing practical applications. If the experience is conclusive (an evaluation of impact is planned after 1 year of utilization), it could be expanded to other fields to study, and other West African countries.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
