Title: Africa. AIDS may be leveling off. Journal: CDC AIDS Wkly; 1988 Apr 18; ():3. PubMed ID: 12342029. Abstract: In rural Zaire, there is evidence that the AIDS epidemic is leveling off. According to figures from blood banks, there has been no increase in the infection rate of blood donors and pregnant women in Kinshasa, the capital of Zaire. As of 1988, the positive percentage rate was 6%, and had been at that level for 4 years. 1 reason for this leveling off is that the small segment of the population that has a high rate of promiscuity are all infected. Those most likely to become infected are now seropositive, and those leading traditional, middle-class lifestyles have a lower risk of infection. In Zambia, the rate of infection in pregnant women has been increasing at a slower rate, rising from 8.5% to 11% in 1987, and remaining relatively stable at that level. The relative stability of the rate of AIDS infection in rural Zaire is in sharp contrast with the rapid spread of the virus in major African cities. This is attributed to the traditional village life in Zaire, which results a low risk of HIV infection.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
