Title: Pediatric AIDS: children dramatize the far-reaching costs of the pandemic. Author: Finger WR. Journal: Netw Res Triangle Park N C; 1990 Aug; 11(3):3-7. PubMed ID: 12342907. Abstract: 1 million HIV-positive babies are estimated to have been born by the end of 1992. 3 challenges are involved with children having AIDS: prevention, AIDS orphans, and care for AIDS-inflicted children. To prevent AIDS in children, transmission from adults must case. Family planning programs should provide AIDS education and encourage condom use to prevent HIV transmission. Education in AIDS prevention should also be available to health care workers. Screening blood supplies could prevent HIV transmission through blood transfusions. The 2nd challenge is providing care for orphans whose parents have died from this disease. It is estimated that 3-5 million AIDS orphans will exist in central and east Africa by the year 2000. Providing health care and social services for these orphans is very costly for social service and family support organizations. Adequate medical treatment for children with AIDS is restricted by limited diagnostic facilities, costs, and limited AIDS diagnosis in children also having diarrhea or malnutrition. National standard guidelines are necessary to evaluate the need and cost of drugs in treating pediatric AIDS.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
