Abstract: In 1989, Nigeria established a National Commission for Women to promote the general welfare of women. The Commission has the following objectives: 1) to promote the involvement of women in the development of human resources and of the nation, with equal rights and corresponding obligations; 2) to promote responsible motherhood and maternal health; 3) to improve women;s civic, political, cultural, social, and economic education; 4) to support the work of non-governmental organizations and act as coordinator between the government and women's organizations; 5) to encourage cooperative societies and activities among women and stimulate creative entrepreneurship in cottage industries and small-scale industries; 6) to formulate and propagate moral values in families and society and establish programs to inculcate moral education in women and children; and 7) to work toward the elimination of all practices which discriminate against and dehumanize women. In order to fulfill these objectives, the National Commission will formulate policies; establish state and local government council bodies to implement the policies; provide loans and vocational training; monitor and act as a liaison with appropriate organizations and international bodies, submit reports on women's education, counseling, health, and existing legislation; coordinate, grant aid, and evaluate the activities of women's voluntary organizations; and conduct general research and planning to improve the status of women.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
