Title: Against all odds. Author: Chowdhury S. Journal: AIDS Asia; 1995; 2(4):9. PubMed ID: 12346832. Abstract: A family physician who practices in Zaveri Bazar in Bombay, India, first detected HIV infection in his practice in 1991. Zaveri Bazar is a community of jewelers. He then talked to business leaders and social workers in Zaveri Bazar about HIV infection, but they were not interested. In 1993, he randomly tested 108 people and found eight HIV infections. He publicly announced his findings. Workers and craftsmen feared discrimination should their HIV status become public. The media printed several good articles about HIV infection in Zaveri Bazar, but this angered the community and made them fearful. An owner of a jewelry workshop teamed up with the physician to spread information about HIV infection. Eventually, the Lions Club of Churchgate donated a considerable amount of money for an ambulance project for AIDS awareness. The Royale Bengal Trust, the Indian Health Organisation (IHO), and the Lions Club jointly launched the project in April 1995. Several persons, including two physicians, spoke to the crowd about HIV/AIDS in Bengali. IHO volunteers and students of MMP Shah Women's College put on street plays during the inauguration. By 1995, the HIV infection rate in Zaveri Bazar had reached 18%.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
