  • Title: New study on sterilization effectiveness points to need for quality counseling.
    Journal: AVSC News; 1996; 34(2):2, 6. PubMed ID: 12347634.
    Abstract:
The finding of the US Collaborative Review of Sterilization that tubal ligation confers a higher than expected risk of subsequent pregnancy highlights the need for thorough counseling of sterilization acceptors. The study identified a 10-year failure rate of 18.5 pregnancies per 1000 procedures. In response to this report, the AVSC urged that information about the risks, benefits, effectiveness, and side effects of all the various contraceptive options be included in counseling sessions. Also stressed by AVSC was the need for women who have undergone sterilization and who experience signs of pregnancy to see a health care provider immediately.
