Title: The price of sex. Author: Huband M. Journal: Afr Rep; 1991; 36(6):69-70. PubMed ID: 12348299. Abstract: The World Health Organization (WHO) ranks Cote d'Ivoire as the sixth worst affected country in Africa in terms of the number of AIDS cases. WHO figures indicate the presence of 6836 AIDS cases in Cote d'Ivoire, but doctors believe the actual prevalence to be about 7 times greater. By 2001, it is thought that as many as 30,000 AIDS-related deaths will occur annually in the country. Abidjan is particularly affected by HIV infection and AIDS, with AIDS being the main cause of death among adult men in the city and the second leading cause of death among women. 15% of blood donors, an estimated 50% of the city's prostitutes, and 12% of women in Abidjan's pediatric wards are infected with HIV. The level of HIV infection among mothers on the pediatric wards alone means that approximately 3300 HIV-infected babies are born annually in the city. Abidjan has a thriving commercial sex industry and district in which many prostitutes have sexual intercourse without using a condom even though they may be aware of the risk of HIV infection. It is difficult for the women who want to use condoms to convince their male clients to do so when the clients can easily find other prostitutes who will have unprotected sex. Women who would otherwise protect themselves are therefore forced to have unprotected sex if they want to stay in business. Educational programs designed to change behavior have remained ineffective. Official lassitude about the threat of HIV/AIDS and general ignorance and disbelief in the population about the epidemic have facilitated the spread of HIV in Cote d'Ivoire. Programs to market condoms and educate prostitutes are being launched.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
