    Abstract:
Sexuality education addresses the biological, sociocultural, psychological, and spiritual dimensions of sexuality from the cognitive domain, the affective domain, and the behavioral domain. While parents are the main sexuality educators of their children, children also learn about sexuality from their friends, teachers, neighbors, the media, and toys. Recent surveys indicate that most young people consider their parents to be their most important source of information on sexuality, and friends the second most important source, followed by school courses and television. However, most parents are uncomfortable discussing sexual issues with their children and welcome assistance from formal programs. School-based sexuality education programs conducted by trained educators can help children in the ongoing process of sexual learning and promote adult sexual health. To that end, sexuality education helps young people understand a positive view of sexuality, provides them with information and skills on managing their sexual health, and helps them acquire skills to make their own decisions. There is no federal law or policy requiring sexuality or HIV prevention education, 22 states and the District of Colombia require schools to provide sexuality and STD/HIV education, and an additional 15 states require schools to provide STD/HIV education. What should be included in school-based sexuality education, who decides the content of such education, and the effectiveness of sexuality education are discussed. The vast majority of Americans support sexuality education.
