Title: All aboard, next time round. Author: Widdus R. Journal: CVI Forum; 1999 Jul; (18):2-4. PubMed ID: 12349327. Abstract: The closure of the Children's Vaccine Initiative (CVI), a global coalition of organizations, is reported stating its accomplishments. The CVI was launched at the World Summit for Children in 1990 and was funded by various agencies such as the UN Children's Fund, the UN Development Programme, the WHO, the World Bank, and the Rockefeller Foundation. The coalition aims to maximize protection against infectious diseases through the development and utilization of safe, effective, and accessible vaccines. The CVI had contributed much in uplifting the international health situation. Some of these contributions are: providing the machinery for examining the quality and supply of vaccines; introducing new vaccines to developing countries; and calling attention to the other unaddressed needs in vaccine development. On the other hand, there were also flaws in the CVI which lessened its potential, such as the international agencies differed in their desires regarding the role of CVI; there was a confusion over the identity of CVI which prevented the creation of equal partnerships; and the income of CVI consistently was not enough for its approved budget.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
