Title: In search of safe motherhood. Author: Kendo O. Journal: FEMNET News; 1993; 2(4):12-3. PubMed ID: 12349362. Abstract: The launching of the Safe Motherhood Initiative during the 1987 international conference in Kenya first recognized pregnancy-related deaths as one of the greatest problem faced by developing countries. WHO estimates that as many as 500,000 maternal deaths occur annually worldwide. In developing countries, 30% of mothers face the risk of maternal death as compared to 1% of mothers from developed countries. Fertility rates of women aged 15-49 years determine the risk of maternal deaths. The Safe Motherhood Initiative attempts to reduce maternal death while expecting or immediately after delivery. Medical causes such as hemorrhage, abortion complications, hypertension during pregnancy, infection and obstructed labor, health behavior, and age factors could increase the risk of maternal deaths. Some of the suggested interventions for prevention of maternal deaths are the following: access to health facilities and information, family planning information campaign, reducing the number of pregnancy, provision of safe and legal abortion, and training of traditional birth attendants.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
