  • Title: The rising toll of HIV infection among Nigerian children.
    Author: Raufu A.
Journal: AIDS Anal Afr; 2000 Jan; 10(4):11. PubMed ID: 12349434.
    Abstract:
Since its first AIDS case diagnosis in 1986, a rising trend of HIV infection among Nigerian children has been occurring. Evidence suggests that blood transfusion and mother-to-child transmission were the primary modes of transmission of HIV among pediatric patients. Also, tens of thousands suffer hardship when their HIV-positive parents die; in 1998 about 184,000 children were orphaned by AIDS. Despite the recognition of its existence for many years, the Nigerian government has been slow in responding to the AIDS epidemic. As a result, the introduction of a national AIDS policy has not created a concrete behavioral change among the Nigerian population. Moreover, the lack of political will and constant replacement of health ministers have adversely affected Nigeria's campaign against HIV. Unless the government treats the AIDS problem seriously, Nigeria is on the threshold of an unprecedented calamity.
