Title: Africa's contribution to the ICPD + 5: a review and appraisal. Journal: Afr Popul Dev Bull; 1999; ():1-2. PubMed ID: 12349445. Abstract: In line with the fifth year anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD+5) in 1999, the UN General Assembly convenes a special session for a comprehensive review and appraisal of the implementation of the ICPD Programme of Action (ICPD-PA). The review will analyze the operational experience at the country level to determine the achievements and to identify constraints for the progress in the implementation of the ICPD recommendations. To contribute to the ICPD+5 process, five-year regional reviews on population and development were also conducted. In Africa, the Economic Commission for Africa, the African Development Bank, and the Organization of African Unity, together with various UN agencies, conducted several activities and organized meetings in which member states shared their experiences concerning the implementation of the ICPD-PA and the Dakar/Ngor Declaration on Population, Family, and Sustainable Development (DND). On September 23-25, 1998, the Third Meeting of the Africa Follow-up Committee reviewed country-specific reports and adopted 82 recommendations for further implementation of the DND and the ICPD-PA. As a final stage of the ICPD+5 review process, the Third General Assembly of the African Population Commission discussed the regional ICPD report, which will be reviewed further by the Economic and Social Council. The recommendations of the Council will be an input to the Special ICPD+5 Session of the General Assembly.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
