Title: Overview of the UNFPA / CSTs in population activities. Journal: Afr Popul Dev Bull; 1999; ():17. PubMed ID: 12349448. Abstract: The reality that country development lies in the programs implemented by the country itself and requires multidisciplinary input was highlighted by the UN Population Fund (UNFPA). In response to this need, the UNFPA and partners developed the Technical Support Services (TSS) system in 1992. Within the TSS system, the nationals and national institutions in the first level provided technical services. The second level is composed of UNFPA Country Support Teams (UNFPA/CSTs), while the third level consists of TSS specialist at the agency headquarters or at the headquarters of Regional Commissions. Three of the 8 CSTs are located in Africa--the Addis Ababa CST, the Dakar CST, and the Harare CST--where technical services to countries are provided and collaboration with regional institutions are being conducted. The composition of Regional Advisers within each UNFPA/CST addresses the subregional technical needs within three thematic priorities identified by the UNFPA following the International Conference on Program and Development. The three priority thematic areas are reproductive health and rights, population and development strategies, and advocacy. One of the strengths of the UNFPA/CSTs is the multidisciplinary nature of the composition of the advisers drawn from various agencies.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
