Title: Country profiles: Senegal. Journal: Afr Link; 1995 Apr; ():16-7. PubMed ID: 12349563. Abstract: This article presents the country profile of Senegal in terms of the status of women, family planning environment, and reproductive health services. Senegalese women have had increasing participation in the labor force in the last 20 years. In 1985, 39% of the total labor force was female and 54% of women between 15 and 64 years old were in the work force. Although rural Senegalese women have control over the income they receive, their independence is limited because they do not own land, or have control of land allotted to them for farming. The National Population Policy's major areas of concern are Maternal and Child Health, child spacing, regional development, and research. Among the constraints to the successful promotion of family planning are high illiteracy rate, and sociocultural practices such as early marriages and widespread polygamy. The two nongovernmental family planning organizations in Senegal are the Association Senegalaise Pour le Bien-Etre Familial (ASBEF) and the Association Senegalaise Pour la Promotion de la Famille. One project of ASBEF is to integrate family planning programs into nonreproductive health related development projects of both men and women. Aside from their two films, which have raised awareness in reproductive health and family planning, ASBEF established the AIDS Day project to create awareness among firemen, soldiers, and police on the dangers of AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
