  • Title: Current concepts regarding use of DMPA.
    Author: Kaunitz AM.
    Journal: J Reprod Med; 2002 Sep; 47(9 Suppl):785-9. PubMed ID: 12380407.
    Abstract:
Since its introduction, depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) has proven to be among the most effective methods of reversible contraception. The unique set of characteristics that distinguish this method from other contraceptive options may render it the most suitable method of pregnancy prevention for many women. Accurate information is essential in counseling women attempting to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of this method of contraception relative to others. Since DMPA was approved in the U.S. for use as a contraceptive, clinical studies have continued to generate new details about the effect of this agent on bleeding patterns, mood and weight change. In this overview, the goal is to evaluate objective data in the context of practical management.
