  • Title: Psychiatric aspects of intestinal bypass surgery for obesity.
    Author: Rigden SR, Hagen DQ.
Journal: Am Fam Physician; 1976 May; 13(5):68-71. PubMed ID: 1274809.
    Abstract:
Intestinal bypass patients were studied six and 30 months postoperatively with regard to medical morbidity, weight loss and psychologic and behavioral adjustments. In general, at 30 months they were more stable and productive. Their expectations in terms of weight loss and psychologic changes may not have been met; yet, a majority of them have recommended the operation to others. Preoperative selection criteria will help physicians choose good candidates and discourage the others. Long-term follow-up is essential.
