    Abstract:
    Council Directive (89/397/EEC) is presented which harmonize official control of foodstuffs. The main principles are given, obligatory for the Member States, concerning control of foodstuffs, food additives and materials intended to come into contact with foodstuffs performed by home authorities. The proposal of supplementary Directive is discussed, dealing with problems of qualification and competence of laboratory personnel, introduction of quality assurance systems in the laboratories and the system of information exchange of foodstuffs within the Common Market.
