Title: [Demonstration of a critical period of ovarian activity in the control of early receptivity induced by estrogen in the female rat with 4-day cycles]. Author: Roos J, Roos M, Aron C. Journal: C R Seances Soc Biol Fil; 1976; 170(1):176-8. PubMed ID: 134770. Abstract: A significant decrease in early receptivity during the night from dioestrus II to prooestrus was observed in estrogen-treated 4-day cyclic rats following bilateral ovariectomy on dioestrus II at 4-5 p.m. Early receptivity appeared then to be dependent on the presence of ovary at this stage of the cycle. The mechanism whereby the adrenals may compensate for the ovaries when removed on dioestrus I, at 10-11 a. m. (Roos et al. 1973), was not observed in the present experimental conditions. Early receptivity can be induced with dioestrus II to proestrus in rats with 4-day cycles. This experiment used 96 rats, aged 3 to 4 months. They were on a 4-day cycle of 2 days dioestrus (I and II), one day of proestrus and 1 day of oestrus. They were divided into 2 groups, 1 with females retaining their adrenals, the other with females that had had them removed. In each group 16 females had ovariotomies on dioestrus II between 16 and 17 hours. A significant decrease in early receptivity was noted following bilateral ovariotomy on dioestrus II from 4 to 5 pm. Therefore early receptivity appeared to be dependent upon the presence of the ovary at this stage of the cycle. It was noted by Roos in 1973 that the adrenals may compensate for the ovaries when they are removed on dioestrus I at 10 to 11 a.m., but this was not the case under the present experimental conditions.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
