Title: The significance of human chorionic gonadotropin in blood serum for the early diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy. Author: Milwidsky A, Adoni A, Palti Z, Stark M, Segal S. Journal: Acta Obstet Gynecol Scand; 1977; 56(1):19-21. PubMed ID: 139073. Abstract: Determination of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) values in the serum by the radioimmunoassay technique, was performed in 23 women with suspected ectopic pregnancies. In 16 cases the values of HCG were high and the diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy was verified by laparoscopy and laparotomy. In 7 cases low HCG values were found and ectopic pregnancy was excluded. The detection of HCG in the serum was found to be an excellent tool for the early diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy, thus helping to prevent the dangerous sequelae which follow the late diagnosis of this condition. Serum human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) levels were determined by radioimmunoassay in 23 women with suspected ectopic pregnancy. HCG levels were high in 14 cases, and pregnancy was confirmed in each case by laparoscopy and laparotomy. Immunologic urine tests in 9 of these cases gave 5 negative and 4 postive results. The results demonstrate that the detection of HCG in serum is an excellent method for the early diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
