Abstract: In the 60s, Occupational Therapy (OT) with spinal cord injured patients had primarily been based on manual activities, aimed at improving functional levels. Gradually, attainment of the highest possible level of independence became a central emphasis of OT care. While creative development of the patient seemed to conflict with this foremost objective of independence, practical experience in the meantime has taught that creative activity can be an avenue toward independence.
