Abstract: The refeeding syndrome is an underappreciated entity characterized by acute electrolyte derangements--notably hypophosphatemia--that occur during nutritional repletion of patients with significant suboptimal caloric intake. Adverse effects of hypophosphatemia include cardiac failure, muscle weakness, immune dysfunction, and death.
