    Abstract:
    The District Court of Appeal of Florida, Second District, on 6 June 2003 (Schiavo IV), affirmed a guardianship court's ruling to withdraw life support from, Terri Schiavo, a woman in a persistent vegetative state, whose husband sought such action and whose parents opposed it. The court determined that, contrary to testimony by a physician chosen by the parents but in accord with the testimony of three other physicians, Schiavo was in a persistent vegetative state. Because the family could not agree, the trial court acted as surrogate or proxy decisionmaker calling for the guardianship court to hold a hearing to enter a new order scheduling removal of Schiavo's nutrition and hydration tube.
